Announcements2008 Tournament Schedule
Changes for 2008 In the upcoming year, we are moving to a schedule of four quarterly tournaments. There was no tournament in January. We had a Swiss tournament on February 16th. Our next event is a Quad on May 17, then a Swiss again in August, and finally a Quad in November. All of our quarterly tournaments are held on the third Saturday of their month in the Holiday Inn Hotel in Elgin, our usual playing site just north of I-90 and east of Rt. 31. The entrance fee for these single day events events is now $20. All of these tournaments are scheduled to offer cash prizes based on entries. In a Quad, we will return $40 for first place and $20 for second in each Quad. As always, we reserve the right to divide our Swiss tournaments into two sections if attendance warrants, usually 26 or more players.
Next Event McHenry Area Chess will be hosting a four round Quad on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Elgin. For this event the entry fee will be $20. There will be three rounds of play at Game/80 time controls. Registration starts at 8:30AM.
2007 Annual Championship On September 22nd, we crowned a new McHenry Area Chess Champion. Once again, Jim Marshall showed his ability to play hard and win under pressure. His perfect score of 4.0 won clear first place. Second place was won by a newcomer to our group, Daumants Hazners, who was held to a draw in one game. Seven players scored 3.0, with tie break points giving Third through Fifth to Charles Jennings, Chris Baumgartner, Don Winsauer, Matt Riddle and Alex Noll, in that order. We awarded trophies for First and Second Senior to Daumants Hazners and John Schaeffer. First and Second Junior went to Matt Riddle and Alex Noll. Our scholastic champions was Megan Herrera for Kindergarten to second grade. The third to fifth grade champion was Brian Teper, with Allen Gau taking second. The champion in the sixth to eighth grade category was Austin Steinforth, with Philip Kreisman scond. Our city champions were Tim Ailes for Algonquin, Alex Noll for Cary, Bob Cunningham for Crystal Lake, Don Winsauer for Elgin, Riley Brands for Lake in the Hills, Charles Jennings for McHenry, Benjamin Hartman for Rockford, and Jim Marshall for St. Charles. We had no entrants from Woodstock. First Traveler went to Daumants Hazners and Second Traveler was Matt Riddle.
Raffle Winner At the championship tournament, we raffled off a nice game table, which was donated to us by Crystal Lake Lighting on Virginia Road in Crystal Lake. The winner was Peter Spizzirri, who runs the Cary Kings. Congratulations, Peter.
Recent Donations Mr. Whited of chesscountry.com made a generous donation at our February tournament, allowing us to give out higher cash prizes. The site is extensive and includes a free live play server. It's well worth visiting.
