We started off the new year with a Swiss tournament on January 15, 2005. Thirty four players participated, which was our second highest attendance for a single event, second only to last year's championship in August. We were hoping for even bigger numbers, having advertised in Chess Life and reserving two rooms on the first floor of the hotel. With that arrangement, we had the capacity for at least 48 players. But the TLA in Chess Life appeared less than two weeks after the tourney date, and we're still growing by word of mouth. We expect future tournaments to more closely match our target attendance. Top seeded player at this event was Aleksanda Stamnov, at 2328 the highest rated player we've had yet and the second master to attend one of our events. Also in attendance were two experts, Jim Marshall and Mark Robledo Jr. We also had four class A players and five class B players. There were 22 players rated below 1600 , of which 11 were below 1200. So our events are growing at the higher levels of play while still providing plenty of exposure for more up and coming players. The tournament ended with a three way tie for first thru third at 3.5 points, the combined prize fund being shared between Aleksanda Stamnov (2328), Jim Marshall (2151), and Robert Loncarevic (1968). The Under 1600 prize went to a newcomer to our events, Abdulah Prijic (1492), and the Under 1200 prize went to a McHenry Area Chess regular, Jeremy Crouse (1186). Once again, David Hullinger (586) won the biggest upset win prize for his 870 point difference victory. The games from this event are organized by player, as we will be doing for all of our Swiss events from here on. Click on any name in the table below to see that player's games. Players are sorted by ratings, with prizes noted. (As of 1/22/05. the games have not been added yet. In a day or so the following table should contain live links to the games. Thank you for your patience.)
