Walter Alberts - Jeff Colwell [B25]

McHenry Area Chess 2005 Championship/Elgin (2) 2005

1. Nc3 c5 2. e4 Nc6 3. g3 g6 By transposition, a closed Sicilian. 4. Bg2 Bg7 5. d3 d6 6. f4 Nf6 I prefer 6... e6 with the idea of ..Ne7, preventing the f5 break, which is White's main idea in this opening. 7. Nf3 O-O 8. O-O a6 9. h3 b5 10. e5 dxe5 Something like 10... Nd7 would hold the fort better. 11. Nxe5 Nxe5 12. fxe5 Now the rook is en prise, but it isn't clear whether the players missed this or just wanted to try to get some "important" moves in first. It turns out that taking the rook, or moving it out of harm's way, was almost always better than the move chosen. 12... Nh5 13. g4 Qd4+ 14. Rf2 Ng3 15. Bf4 Bxe5 16. Bxe5 Qxe5 17. Bxa8 Finally! It must be said that White's position was always winning since move 11, but the rook probably should have been taken or moved sooner. 1-0
