McHenry Area Chess 2005 Championship/Elgin (2) 2005

Phil gets punished severely for some innocent-looking errors.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. d4 Nxe4 4. Bd3 d5 5. Nxe5 Bb4+ 5... Nd7 is book. I don't like Bb4+ since 6.c3 is a useful move for White. 6. c3 Be7 7. Nd2 Bf5 Dangerous territory - Black should have just retreated the knight. 8. Qf3 Qc8 9. Nxe4 f6 10. Nxf6+ Not the only move that does the trick, but very elegant. 10... gxf6 11. Qh5+ Black will lose a ton of material shortly. 1-0

The Black queen is easily confined in the corner. The best plan would have been to extract the queen by 42... Qa3 or 42... Qa4 Black realized this just as all bad moves are recognized, just as the hand leaves the piece! 43. Qg4+ Kd8 This awkward move is necessary as anything else loses the queen to a rook check on the b file. 44. Qd1? Much better is 44. Bf6+ winning the exchange. 44... Qa3 45. Qg4 Rf8 46. Qh4+ Kc8 47.
