The Pieces There are six different kind of pieces in chess. They are the Pawns, the Knights, the Bishops, the Rooks, the Queen, and the King. These get placed on the board in a special starting position. The board is always set up with "White on right." The queen always stands on a square of her own color, called "Queen on color." The Queens always stand facing each other on the same file, and so do the kings. Pieces have values, useful when considering trades. You want to remember these. Pawns are worth 1 point each. Each knight is worth about 3 points. The Bishops are worth about 3 too. Rooks are worth 5, and the Queen 9 points. So a rook and a pawn is worth about as much (6 points) as a knight and a bishop Each piece has its own rules for how it moves, and each type of piece is different. Pawns are the most complicated pieces to learn because they have special rules. There a special move called castling and you have to know those rules too. Beginners often make mistakes about these special rules. It takes a little time getting to know and get used to them all.
