Mission Statement

The purpose of McHenry Area Chess is to promote chess as an educational and enjoyable activity for the people of McHenry County, Illinois, and the surrounding area. To do this we organize regularly scheduled occasions for the casual play of chess and also run periodic tournaments within the area, to provide convenient access for quality competitive chess in this area.  We also provide this website to inform the public of our own activities, and to increase the visibility of other chess organizations in the area.

Club Profile

The club is organized as a formal structure to allow us to run rated tournaments, but originally we met for casual play.  We do this frequently and in a few locations, to meet the needs of people in different areas with different schedules.  Currently, you can find us playing every Tuesday evening (7-10 PM) at the Crystal Lake Borders Bookstore at 6000 Northwest Hwy (Rt. 14) in Crystal Lake 815-455-0302.  This is our most regularly scheduled and reliable meeting place.  On Thursday evenings we play at another Borders Bookstore in the city of McHenry, on 2221 Richmond Road (Route 31) 815-578-9330, also from 7 to 10 PM.  In addition, we meet intermittently at Caribou Coffee in Lake in the Hills, 285 N. Randall Road 847-854-2849 on the weekends (1 - 5 PM), and sometimes at Caribou Coffee in Elgin (same times) at 855 S,. Randall Road 847-841-7190.  In addition, we play games just for fun following our tournaments at the Crystal Lake Park District Headquarters at ! Crystal Lake Avenue, Crystal Lake, on the third Saturday evening of each month (except January '04) from 7 to 10 PM.

Tournaments are held on the third Saturday of each month, as we have done since February of 2004.  Since they are rated, USCF membership is required. We will help you sign up with the USCF if this is your first tournament or if your membership has expired.  Join or renew with us and you get a break with our affiliate discount.

We also intend to award a small scholarship annually to a person who best exemplifies the goals of the group.  The award is unrestricted, but it is intended primarily to enhance the winner's involvement in chess, such as to help cover expenses for entry in national tournaments, or for educational material.  If the group does not have sufficient funds to make the award, or if a suitable candidate has not been nominated, it will be held over until the following year.

But above all else, we want to provide the means for the people of our community to enjoy and play one of the best and most ancient of games in human history, the game of chess.
