41. Kc2 or 41. Qf3, but it'd be a little less deep trouble.

41... Rxd4+
42. Qxd4 Bxd4
43. Rc2 Bxc3+ Black wins quickly with 43... Be3+ and if 44. Ke1 mate is unavoidable after 44... Qh5, and if 44. Kd1 Qd8+ 45. Nd5 is forced, followed by 45... cxd5 winning more material and leaving White no prospects for complications. But instead, Black plays conservatively, exchanging material to achieve a clearly won endgame. White continues of for awhile, maybe hoping to find a stalemate. But Black is willing to trade off the queen for the rook to simplify further and advance the pawns, making it clear no blunders are in the offing. Eventually, twenty moves later, White admits defeat.

44. Rxc3 Qxa2+
45. Kd3 Qb1+
46. Kd4 Qd1+
47. Ke4 Qxe2+
48. Kxf4 Qe6
49. Re3 Qxc4+

50. Kf5 Qd4
51. Re8+ Qd8
52. Rxd8+ Kxd8
53. Ke6 Kc7
54. Ke5 Kb6
55. Kd4 Kb5
56. Kc3 Kc5
57. Kb3 Kd4
58. Kc2 Kc4
59. Kb2 Kd3
60. Kc1 Kc3
61. Kb1 Kd2
62. Kb2 b5
63. Kb3 c5
64. Kb2 c4
65. Resigns

A difficult but excellent game by both players, made even more impressive by that fact that the player of the Black pieces was only ten years old!

Other tournament positions

There were some very nice tactics in our July games. Some were seen, and some were not. How do you think you would have done in these positions?

When is a game won? Possibly at every move, if you’re alert to the possibilities. In the following

position from Reed Vs. Allison, after 20. Qb3

Black has a devastating move. Do you see it? Roger did. It’s 20… Ne5. Now there’s no way to keep a knight off g4, which supports the queen giving mate on h2. White resigned immediately.

This position is from Cen Vs. Ailes, after 21… e6. What’s the best move?

White finds 22. Bxg6! Winning at least a pawn, and giving Black opportunities to make further mistakes. The game followed 22… Rxc1
