Chess at the Crystal Lake Public Library This page is still under construction. Thank you for your patience!?. Bob Cairone does frequent chess workshops at the Crystal Lake Public Library. At this time, the next workshop starts up in is in January 2010. Seven weeks, from January 7 to February 18. We meet on Thursday nights in the Ames Room, from 6:30 PM to 8. The kids are welcome to stay and play until the library closes at 9. My typical format is to give a half hour lecture, then let the kids play against each other. Sometimes I interfere in free play games to make points or give reminders. I'll correct bad moves, or explain why a move was bad but make the player keep it. I'll point out missed opportunities, or tell someone they have a particularly good move and ask them to find it. We're not about winning and losing against each other in the workshops. In the last week, I give a simul against all the kids in the class, and hand out trophies to anyone who wins. This workshop is not for absolute beginners. If you don't know how to play, the library is working on another program, maybe in the afternoons and taught by kids from a high school chess club. I don't know what they have set up yet, so if that's what you're looking for please call or email the Crystal Lake Public Library at 815-459-1687. This workshop will be a bit more advanced. Anyone who has been in my previous workshops is certainly welcome. Older kids too, even up to those from high school chess clubs. These workshops are joint productions of the youth and young adult departments at the library. Parents are welcome to sit in and even participate. My basic method is to dialog with the kids about what's important in specific positions, and sometimes I talk on a grander scale of strategic principals. I walk the kids through solutions to puzzles, and I don't pick the easiest problems. I'm sure a lot of the things I say aren't fully understood by some of the participants, but I often see a lot get through to a lot of the kids too. Those looks are what makes teaching the workshops so enjoyable. Plus I'm hoping adding older kids will benefit them as well as help move up some of the younger kids faster. Sometimes young players advance very fast. I've seen that work before. Hoping to see you there next year. !>Should develop a page for the CLPL to have on their site.!? |
