Below is a description of our scholarship program. Use the links on the left to learn about our past recipients.
One of the important functions of McHenry Area Chess, as part of our goal to support the community's involvement in the game of chess, is the awarding of an annual scholarship. This grant, not to be less than one hundred dollars, is intended to finance the recipient's increasing activity in chess. The best proposed used for the money is to facilitate play in a rated tournament of national importance, such as the US Open or the US Amateur Team Championships. They money is unrestricted, and can be used to pay for the entrance fee, travel, food and lodging, or anything the player deems worthwhile. The scholarship can also be given to support the study of the game by the recipient. In this case, it is expected the money would be used to obtain lessons from a qualified instructor, or for educational materials such as books, computer software, or instructional videos. It's up to the individual designated to receive the scholarship to decide how the money would best meet their needs. An announcement soliciting nominations will be circulated with our October newsletter. Only members in good standing of McHenry Area Chess may nominate individuals for this scholarship, and one member may nominate at most three individuals for consideration. It is one of the duties of the executive officers that they nominate at least one individual for the scholarship each year, so there will always be nominations for consideration. All people nominated will be asked to submit a short essay describing their involvement with chess and how they would intend to use the money. However, this is not a literary contest, and the quality of writing in the essay is not a factor in determining who will be selected for the scholarship. This is especially important since we have so many young scholastic players in our area, and we consider them to be just as deserving of the scholarship as an older player. As such, it is perfectly acceptable for a parent to help in writing the essay, provided that the ideas and feelings expressed are those of the nominated person. These essays are due by the end of November, and the recipient will be decided by the three officers of McHenry Area Chess by the end of December, with the award to be announced in the January newsletter, and presented at the January tournament if practical. All individuals nominated must be actively involved with the game of chess at the time of their nomination, and must be a resident of McHenry County, Illinois, or of the surrounding area. However, the nominated individual themselves do not have to be a member of McHenry Area Chess. The executive officers of McHenry Area Chess and the members of their immediate families are not eligible for this scholarship. A further restriction is that he same individual cannot be the recipient of the scholarship more than two years consecutively. The amount of the award must be at least one hundred dollars, but there is no limitation on the maximum amount that can be awarded to a single individual. If sufficiently large monies are available in the scholarship fund, the executives may, at their discretion, make multiple awards, provided that no individual award is less than one hundred dollars. In that case, the amount of the awards does not have to be the same. Should there be an insufficient amount in the scholarship fund to meet this minimum requirement, then no scholarship shall be granted that year, and the money will be held over and allowed to accumulate for the following year's scholarship. However, if the scholarship fund contains at least the minimum one hundred dollars, a scholarship must be awarded that year. A complete history of scholarship recipients will be maintained in this web site. Click here to nominate someone for the McHenry Area scholarship award.
